get to know me
My name is Alex Dionysios Karavasilis and I was born in Athens, Greece.
I come from one of the oldest and historic mykonian families and I have spend a lot of time in the island, growing up, getting to know to love and respect every part of it's history, tradition and beautiful land.
Jazz in Mykonos is, for me, a vision I want to make real, as a way to bring the musical artform I love and to establish it as an ideal soundtrack for the Aegean landscape, as well as adding diversity to the local music scenery.
My journey in the world of music started when I was 9 years old.
I then began studying classical piano in the National Conservatory.
During my high school years I studied electric guitar, as well, at the Athens College conservatory and found a peculiar interest in composing. My first contact with music performance was on several school bands I was involved with.
After finishing high school, I've lived in the UK studying, Architecture in Greenwich University, Computer animation and Special Effects in Bradford University and Video Production and Film studies in the university of West London, while I continued being involved in several bands, as well as DJ-ing, performing in several bars.
After my return in Athens in 2013 I worked professionaly, composing music, in short films, theatrical plays and advertisments as well as performing music for art installations and art performances.
I also resumed my studies in music attending CMRC (Contemporary Music Research Center) in Athens Conservatory for Electroacoustic music composition on the Synthi100, Film scoring and music production in Nakas Conservatory with Costas Varotsis and Classical Harmony with Evaggelia Velli Kosma.
In 2015 I entered the world of Jazz, which I was drown to from my younger years.
First I studied drums with Nikos Sidirokastritis both in private and by attending the two year professional course in LAB music school and then with Anastatasis Gouliaris by attending the Jazz department of Athenaum Conservatory where I also begun my diploma studies in Jazz improvisation and Jazz ensemble, under the supervision of Sylvio Syrros.
In 2017 I redirected my studies to Jazz saxophone, which I exclusively perform with, professionaly from 2020.
The last decade I have played with a lot of well known and respected musicians such as Stefanos Kozanis, Yorgos Danis, Andreas Papagiannakopoulos et al. and in a lot of jazz venues such as Kelari, Spiti art bar, Zoo etc.
